Catania Sicily: A day with 4-Year-Olds

Catania is a historic city located on the east coast of Sicily and is a popular tourist destination, known for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and delicious seafood cuisine. For those looking to explore Catania’s rich culture and history, I recommend visiting the Greek ruins of Acropolis Park and the Roman amphitheater. For those wanting to enjoy Catania’s beautiful beaches, the city has a number of great options, including Playa Grande and La Plaja. And of course, no visit to Catania would be complete without sampling the city’s delicious seafood cuisine.

Roman Odeon

Originally built in the 2nd century AD, the Odeon was used for music and poetry performances. The structure was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1693 but has since been restored to its former glory.

This well-preserved ancient theater was built in the 2nd century AD and could seat up to 1,500 people. The Teatro romano di Catania was used for various events, including musical performances, poetry readings, and even political speeches.

Today, the theater is open to the public and is a popular spot for tourists to take photos. Visitors can explore the structure’s well-preserved interior, which includes a number of frescoes and mosaics. The Odeon is also a great place to enjoy views of the city, with its elevated position overlooking Catania.

Cattedrale di Sant’Agata

The Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is one of the most important religious sites in Catania. This grand cathedral was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Sant’Agata, the city’s patron saint. The Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is a beautiful example of Sicilian Romanesque architecture, and its imposing façade is a sight to behold. Inside, the cathedral is just as stunning, with intricate mosaics and frescoes adorning the walls.

The courtyard around the cathedral was a nice place to stop to rest our feet and people-watch while having a snack.

Markets

One of the best ways to experience Catania’s vibrant culture is to visit one of its many street markets. Street markets are a staple of Sicilian life, and Catania has some of the best on the island. I recommend visiting the fish market, where you can see (and smell!) the catch of the day being brought in from the Mediterranean Sea.

The produce market is also a great place to get a taste of Sicilian life, with its colorful fruits and vegetables on display. If you’re looking for souvenirs, the street markets are a great place to find traditional Sicilian crafts and foods.
