Lisbon, Portugal: Castle Hopping with Kids
Lisbon, Portugal is a stunningly beautiful city that has something to offer everyone. From its rich history and stunning architecture to its delicious food and wine.
Visitors can explore the city’s many museums and historical sites, stroll through its picturesque streets, enjoy its vibrant nightlife, and much more. Lisbon is also the perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
Our trip to Lisbon was more of a chill day than anything. After hitting many of the other Mediterranean ports, we decided to take it easy (relatively speaking).
Castle of São Jorge
Lisbon is home to a number of stunning castles that are well worth a visit. The most famous of these is the Castle of Sao Jorge, which dates back to the 11th century.
This castle offers stunning views of the city below and is also home to a museum that tells the story of Lisbon’s history.
With 4-year-olds we had in tow, it was a great stop for them to explore and see castles they normally only see in books.
Belém Tower
The Belém Tower was built in the early 16th century and is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Lisbon and the River Tagus.
Food
If you’re a fan of seafood, then you’ll absolutely love the food in Lisbon. The city is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the world, serving up delicious dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t worry – there are plenty of other options available as well. From traditional Portuguese cuisine to international fare.
There are going to be people out there that think we were crazy, but we actually ate pizza in Lisbon, and I have to say it was one of the best I have ever had – far better than your typical delivery place in the US. All the food we ate here was so good, we forgot to take pictures!
Shopping
If you’re looking for some shopping, downtown Lisbon has you covered. From boutiques to department stores, you’ll find everything you’re looking for in the city’s downtown area. By far the two most popular local items are straw handbags and ceramics.
Straw Handbags
Straw handbags are a staple of Portuguese fashion, and you’ll see them everywhere in Lisbon. These colorful bags are often adorned with intricate designs, and they make the perfect souvenir to take home with you from your trip to Lisbon. You can find straw handbags at many of the city’s markets and shops, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them as you explore Lisbon.

These shops are the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir from your trip to Lisbon. Lisbon’s downtown area is a wonderful place to explore. The streets are lined with beautiful buildings, many of which date back centuries. There are also a number of excellent restaurants, bars, and cafes in the area, making it the perfect place to grab a bite or relax with a drink.
If you have read any of my posts, you will know that putting down the map, and wandering the city is by far the best way to find that unique experience the family will remember. Not to mention time away from the crowds and tourists.
