Explore the History of Stonehenge and Bath on a Fun Day Trip from London!

Stonehenge and the Roman Baths are two of the most popular tourist destinations in England. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument that is thought to have been built between 3100 and 2000 BC. The Roman Baths are a well-preserved Roman temple and bathing complex that was built around 60 AD. Both sites are located in the city of Bath, which is about a 2-hour drive from London. Stonehenge is best known for its mysterious origins and its alignment with the sun. The best time to visit Stonehenge is during the summer solstice when the sun rises directly over the stones. The Roman Baths are best known for their beautiful architecture and for the opportunity to take a dip in the naturally heated waters.

Stonehenge is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. This ancient monument is shrouded in mystery and legend and attracts visitors from all over the globe. If you’re planning a trip to Stonehenge, be sure to book a morning tour. This will give you the best opportunity to see the stones without having to fight through hordes of tourists.

The tour guides are also very knowledgeable and can answer all of your questions about Stonehenge. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see one of the famous sunsets over Stonehenge. Either way, a visit to Stonehenge is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Getting to Stonehenge

The best way to get to Stonehenge is by car. There are a few different parking options available, but the most convenient is the Stonehenge Visitor Centre. This center is located just a short walk from the monument, and it has plenty of free parking. There are also a number of bus services that run to Stonehenge from nearby cities, so it’s easy to get there even if you don’t have a car.

We opted to get a car at the London airport early in the morning and made the drive with minimal effort. This also allowed us to continue onto Bath which was another great town to visit while you’re headed out. We even fit in Windsor Castle on the same day. It was definitely a full-day trip but made great use of the day’s rental car.

Sunrise Tour

One of the best times to visit Stonehenge is at sunrise. If you book a morning tour, you’ll get to see the sunrise over the ancient stones. It’s an absolutely incredible experience and one that you won’t soon forget. In addition, you are able to enter the circle of the stones that you normally can not do on your own if visiting independently.

Once you’re at Stonehenge, the first thing you’ll notice is the size of the stones. They are absolutely massive! Even though Stonehenge is more than 4000 years old, the stones are still in remarkably good condition. You’ll also notice that the stones are arranged in a very specific pattern. No one knows for sure why Stonehenge was built, but there are many theories.

After you’ve had a chance to explore Stonehenge, be sure to stop by the visitor center. This is a great place to learn more about the history of Stonehenge and to pick up some souvenirs. There’s also a cafe if you need to grab a bite to eat although it was still closed during our stay due to the early morning hour.

When planning a day’s outing from London definitely plan a stop at Stonehedge. Having done the sunrise tour I would definitely recommend doing it that way as it provided access ahead of general opening times, allowed access into the circle of stone themselves vs the path that goes around it, and stunning view as the sun came up. We happen to hit it during the summer months, so the cooler temperatures were a welcome site as well.

City of Bath

The city of Bath is located in the county of Somerset, in the southwest region of England. The city is known for its natural hot springs, which have been used for bathing and healing since Roman times. In fact, the Roman Baths are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bath! The Roman Baths

The Roman Baths are a complex of thermae, or public baths, that were built in Bath around 70 AD. The baths are fed by natural hot springs, which still provide the water for the baths today.

Visitors can tour the ruins of the Roman Baths, as well as see the pump room and Great Bath, which are still in use today.

We visited the Roman Baths when they first opened in the morning, having come from our sunrise tour at Stonehenge. It was definitely worth getting there when it first opened as it was crowded by the time we finished.

This allowed us to see the Baths with minimal tourists in the area which made for a pleasant walk that neither felt rushed nor allowed for some great photos without a bunch of people standing in them.

Bath is home to many historical sites, but it’s also home to some delicious chocolate! Mrs. Potts Chocolate House is a must-visit for any chocolate lover visiting Bath. This charming shop offers a wide variety of homemade chocolates, as well as hot chocolate and other sweet treats.

During our visit, we went all in and got the ultimate chocolate sampler that was more than enough for our family of 4 and was a great way to relax and get a chocolate rush at the same time.

After having visited the Stonehenge Sunrise tour in the morning and Bath and Roman Baths in the afternoon we headed towards London again to complete our day at Windsor Castle.
