A Royal Day Out: Our Visit to Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is one of the most famous castles in the world, and it’s easy to see why. It’s located in Windsor, England, and it has a long history that dates back to the 11th century. The castle is open to visitors year-round, so if you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop by and check it out!
Windsor Castle is a royal residence, and it’s the official residence of the British monarch. The castle was also one of the queen’s favorite places to stay. Windsor Castle is huge, and there’s a lot to see and do. You can explore the grounds, tour the inside of the castle, and even go horseback riding.
Our visit to Windsor Castle began in the afternoon after having visited Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. We arrived shortly before the gates closed and had reserved one of the last time slots for the day. In general, we lucked off on this entire day’s activities as the weather was fantastic and crows were at a minimum.
The Grounds
While you are able to visit a number of places within the Castle itself, I found the outside grounds the most enjoyable. The inside felt more like a museum, which is fine if you are into that sort of thing, but the outside was nice to walk around on a nice sunny day.
Surrounding Area
While there are a number of shops and eating establishments nearby, I found the surrounding area far too touristy for my liking. It is crowded with vendors and tourists and the shops were filled with cheap souvenirs. We walked through the area as we had parked our car at the bottom of the hill leading up to the castle entrance but otherwise did not spend much time in the area.
End of a Long Day
As the last stop for the day, after visiting Stonehenge and the Roman Baths, it was a good site to hit. If you have never been before I would certainly recommend it, however, it was fairly uneventful and one time was enough. Having been there once now, I think I would have spent more time in Bath and perhaps the surrounding areas.
