Portimao, Portugal: A Day at the Beach
Portimao is a coastal city in Portugal’s Algarve region. The city is known for its beaches, lively nightlife, and fishing industry. Visitors to Portimao can enjoy the city’s Mediterranean climate, as well as its many shops, restaurants, and cafes. The city is also home to a number of historical landmarks, such as the 16th-century Fortaleza de Santa Catarina.
Beaching
The beaches here are definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and where we spent our entire day during our visit. The water is crystal clear and the sand is an orangeish color. Not to mention, the scenery is absolutely stunning.
While I am sure there are other sites nearby, we honestly felt no reason to leave the beach. It was perfect weather and the kids got a little of home by playing in the sand.
Food
Portimao is home to a number of restaurants that serve both local and international cuisine. Visitors to the city can find anything from traditional Portuguese dishes to more modern fare. For those looking for a more unique dining experience, Portimao’s Old Town district is home to a number of cafes and eateries that offer a variety of pastries and snacks.
As we went the day at the beach, we went to La Dolce Vita Pizzeria given how much we liked the pizza in Portugal. It was a great place to relax overlooking the ocean while gabbing some pizza and dessert.
Shopping
We didn’t do much shopping while we were there, but Portimao is home to a number of shopping centers and malls, as well as many smaller shops and boutiques. Visitors to the city can find anything from clothes and accessories to souvenirs and local handicrafts. For those looking for a more unique shopping experience, Portimao’s Old Town district is home to a number of antique shops and markets. The typical items they are known is the pottery and leather goods.
